DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
Soccer is a game comprised of two teams of 11 players each. A team attempts to kick the ball into the goals at the end of the field that the opponents protect while preventing goals at the opposite end that they protect. The team that legally kicks the ball into the opponents’ goal cage more often wins the game. One point is scored for each goal whether scored during regular play or on a penalty shot. Official games are generally played in 10 to 20 min halves for youngers and in 40 to 45 min halves for adults. There is no provision for time-outs during play except in the case of injuries. Games that end in ties may be extended into extra period.
At the start of each game, all players must be on their own halves of the playing field. The ball may be kicked or hit with any part of the body. A player must not advance the ball with the hands, arms; otherwise, an advancing with a dribble or with a pass to a teammate. Goalkeepers, however, may catch, throw, punt, dropkick, and bounce the ball while inside the penalty area. Players may dribble the ball with their legs or pass the ball in an effort to get inside the striking, or penalty box ( a square area in front of the goal). Once inside the box, players may kick for a goal using any legal kick. It should be noted that FIFA rules allow goals to be made from anywhere on the field. Teams are divided into offensive players (five forwards), defensive players (three halfbacks and two fullbacks), and one goalkeeper.
